2026 Full Circle Semester
Mon Jan 12 - Sat May 30, 2026
(139 days)
Ages 16 - 21

Join us on a journey from the heart of the winter wilderness to the waterways and coastlines of the North East as we intimately follow the seasons from January to June. For 5-months we will traverse northern New England under our own power on a climate forward journey. Kroka’s Full Circle Winter Semester combines two months of backcountry skiing expeditions with homesteading, hand craft, a traditional wilderness canoe journey, and a final bike ride home to Kroka.

On the heels of the hottest summers on record and unprecedented natural disasters impacting our local communities, Kroka is committing to a Winter Semester that traverses the mysterious and beautiful wildernesses of the Northeast without the use of private vehicles. We will weave together deep observation with action, the past with the present and future, and academic studies with active hope. You will develop sound judgment for healthy risk-taking and competency in technical adventure sports of backcountry skiing, whitewater canoeing, mountain bikepacking, and marine navigation. You will engage in a rigorous experiential curriculum encompassing the humanities and natural sciences. You will emerge from the program empowered and inspired to transform what you have learned in nature and community into altruistic action. Join our expedition team!

Early Decision Deadline: May 15, 2025 (Acceptances offered no later than May 29, 2025). We will offer 6 spots on our program to applicants this May. If you are not accepted, your application will be added to the regular decision pool.

Regular Decision Deadline: October 1, 2025 (Acceptances offered no later than October 15, 2025).

Cape Cod Sailing Voyage
Sun Jun 21 - Sat Jul 4, 2026
(14 days)
Ages 14 - 16

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime seafaring adventure that few will ever get to experience: a Kroka sailing voyage aboard the "Shenandoah," a stunning 152-foot wooden topsail schooner — believed to be the only one left in the world without an engine for propulsion. We will travel back in time to where water is fetched from hand pumps, food is cooked on a coal stove, and days are spent sailing, singing, working, and studying with your shipmates. At night we will anchor in remote coves, and in the mornings we will explore the Cape Cod seashore in small rowboats — swimming, playing, and snorkeling from sandy beaches.

This adventure begins at Kroka in Marlow, where we will spend the first few days bracing up our water skills with paddling and small-boat sailing excursions - and begin our studies of sailing and the ocean environment: practical skills, marine biology, arts and literature studies, and the science of navigation and coastal piloting! Then we depart for Martha's Vineyard, where we will spend another few days camping and volunteering at local farms while we explore this historic island rich in culture, maritime history, and local sustainable agriculture. For the second week of the program we join our friends from the Martha's Vineyard Ocean Academy who will welcome us on board the Shenandoah. After learning to handle the ropes and rigging, we will raise anchor and set sail to see which way the winds will take us!

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Sea-Fever • By John Masefield

Penobscot Expedition
Sun Jun 21 - Sat Jul 4, 2026
(14 days)
Ages 15 - 18

Offered in partnership with the Maine Local Living School.

Penobscot Expedition is a journey to understand the past and present of the Penobscot Nation. Our expedition is informed by these questions: What does it mean to live in the same place for 10,000 years? What can the ‘dominant culture’ learn from indigenous people?  What is our role in the ongoing struggle for tribal sovereignty? We begin the journey at the Maine Local Living School where we carve poles for upstream canoe travel, paying our respect to indigenous ingenuity.  While on the homestead we will harvest and preserve food, use the solar dehydrator, and process acorns into flour. Departing the homestead, we begin our expedition with rocky, shallow, technical upstream paddling and poling. We follow an ancient canoe route used by Wabanaki tribes to connect the Penobscot and Kennebec River watersheds. We face challenging navigation through the thin headwaters of two rivers, and encounter abundant wild foods, giant turtles, friction fire, and the same difficult portages that have been done for thousands of years. Our destination is the Penobscot River where we will meet Penobscot tribal members on Sugar Island. Here we will learn about tribal history and world views, contemporary issues facing the Penobscot Nation, and what it means to be Penobscot in 2026.

Cohos Trail Backpacking Expedition
Sun Jun 28 - Sat Jul 11, 2026
(14 days)
Ages 15 - 18

Between the White Mountains and Canada lies a little-traveled trail through some of New Hampshire’s most remote and scenic wilderness. Spanning 162 miles of rugged mountainous terrain, the Cohos Trail connects the northern lakes that form the headwaters of the Connecticut River with the high peaks of the White Mountains. This trail and territory is known to be mysterious and home to New Hampshire’s largest population of moose! It is here we will master the art of self-sufficient wilderness travel. Beginning at the northern end of the trail, we hike across bog bridges, past 50-foot cascading waterfalls, and to the summits of little-known and less traveled peaks. Across the many lakes of the Great North Woods we will get views of the highest peaks of the White Mountains. These rocky summits are our destinations! As the mountains grow taller, we will grow more confident navigating with map and compass, cooking delicious food over the fire, and making decisions together as a group. Our backpacks will feel like an extension of our bodies,  and our group will become a tight-knit community, exploring and experiencing the feeling of accomplishment that comes with traveling on your own two feet.

Wild Earth Wanderers
Sun Jul 12 - Sat Jul 25, 2026
(14 days)
Ages 13 - 15

A two week immersion program in Earth living skills and nature connection.

Come enjoy two weeks out in the woods, where together we will deepen the experience and skills that our ancestors knew. We will build shelters and tend the flames of our fires kindled in the old ways with friction, creating a village home out in the forest. Gifts of woods and waters nourish us as we forage, fish and gather what the land has to offer. We will gather and process plants, mushrooms, and animals for food. We will carve, weave and create some of the tools we need to live well. The animals around us will be our teachers too, in their tracks and movements. Using traditional methods we will tan hides, scraping, softening, and working to change an animal skin into a soft, supple material to stitch something useful and beautiful. Through it all we will live with the question, how can we give back to the land that offers us so much? By listening, observing and being still in the landscape, as well as playing games, crafting and singing, we will understand more deeply the land around us, strengthening our connection with the natural world, each other, and ourselves.

This program builds on the experience of Earth Crafts. Those who have prior experience in carving, fire-making, and foraging will get the most out of this in-depth two-week experience. Students are welcome to return for a second year of Wild Earth Wanderers and will find new depths of learning available!

The Champlain Valley holds an immense history, which we’ll learn about as we travel through waters filled with more than 300 shipwrecks. Each day we will embark on a mini-adventure: exploring the coastline by canoe, going for long swims, creating wilderness crafts, scrambling up rocks, fishing from shore, cliff jumping, and sailing the “sea”, weather permitting. We will enjoy magnificent sunrises over the Green Mountains and admire the spectacular skylines of the Adirondacks. Come join our rowdy band!

Paddlers Journey Up North
Sun Jul 19 - Sat Aug 8, 2026
(21 days)
Ages 14 - 18

New in 2026: three weeks of whitewater fun!

Kroka’s Paddler’s Journey Up North returns to its old stomping ground this year with a three-week expedition into the Great North Woods. We begin with a week of intensive paddlesports training at Kroka’s basecamp where the Ashuelot, Cold, West, Connecticut, and Deerfield Rivers offer some of the best canoe and kayak progressions in the Northeast. We will pick berries, work with the farm animals, and go cliff-jumping as we build a tight-knit community. From here we depart for two weeks of expedition whitewater in the White Mountains and Western Maine. After three days of practice at fish-flow on the Kennebec and Dead rivers, we will work our way up to challenging class IV rapids during the weekend release, equipped with Kroka’s fleet of whitewater Catarafts. From here we drive north to the West Branch of the Penobscot River for a weeklong expedition across Lake Chesuncook and down the Ripogenus Gorge at the edge of Baxter State Park. The expedition concludes with an early morning ascent of Mt. Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak.

Students are welcome to return for a second or third year of Paddlerʻs Journey Up North.

Ages 13 - 15

“Not all who wander are lost” - Tolkien

Get ready to find your way through the woods with only a paper map and compass as your guides. This expedition is open to students who have completed Climber’s Journey Up North or another intermediate climbing expedition.

Home to more than 3,000 established routes across more than 100 sandstone cliffs, the Red River Gorge is as alluring as it is expansive. In addition to boasting some of the best sport climbing anywhere, the region is filled with deep, clear swimming holes, ancient caves, and breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. Jacques Memorial Film Screening
Tue Sep 29, 2026
Many generations of Kroka's winter semester programs have been blessed by their encounters with Jacques Duhoux, a wilderness guide who lived and worked in the Groulx/Uapishka mountains of Quebec. This unique 89-year old man passed away in January of this year, at the end of a life of simple beauty and hospitality, embracing a remote region he deeply loved and helped promote. A man of few words, Jacques Duhoux embodied simplicity, and lived in quiet opposition to a society he considered consumeristic - focused on primarily on speed and productivity.

Join us for this memorial film screening of Lysandre Leduc-Boudreau's documentary "Jacques" to help us remember and honor this incredible human who impacted many lives around the world.

"Breaking Barriers, Building Belonging" and "Hike for a Change"
Tue Oct 6, 2026
In 2024 and 2025, Reel Quest Films spent several days filming with Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation to create a new short film, Represent: Breaking Barriers, Building Belonging. They met and interviewed about a dozen amazing adaptive athletes, while joining them on adventures ranging from climbing to cycling to skiing, to an overnight paddling trip in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The film will be shared throughout 2026, and we're excited to share it with you right here in Marlow, NH at Kroka Expeditions.

In May 2024, Josh Moughan from The Dirty Hands Project set off on Hike for a Change, a fundraiser spanning the 230-mile Bay Circuit Trail in Massachusetts that transformed grief into purpose—honoring the life of his son, Ty, and raising awareness for mental health after Ty’s death by suicide. The Reel Quest Films team followed Josh along his journey, documenting the hike and the impact his efforts made in every town he passed through.

In April 2026, Reel Quest Films released the documentary Hike for a Change a month before Josh set off on his namesake fundraiser for a third year in a row. Josh is already showing the film at schools and organizations to inspire deeper discussion and involvement with changing the stigma around mental health and showcasing the benefits of spending time in nature.

Ryan Smith, one of the filmmakers and founders of Reel Quest Films, will be present for a Q&A session and to connect with our local community.
