River Rescue
Sun Jul 4 - Sat Jul 10, 2021
(7 days)
Ages 14 - 16

To be a rescuer takes more then perfecting a specialized skillset: it is a mindset and a way of being, being of service to others, being observant and present in the moment, being at the right place at the right time, taking calculated risks and making well-thought-out split-second decisions, decisions that could save lives. Our first-ever week-long river rescue course offered to students will begin with developing a thorough understanding of the power of moving water, it’s currents, eddies, obstructions, constrictions and other obstacles hidden from sight of an untrained eye. We will focus on swimming in turbulent current and moving safely up and down the rapids in order to reach the person and equipment in need of help. Next we will focus on recovering swimmers and boats. Special focus will be placed on broached boat recovery and studying haul systems and associated knots and rope techniques. Finally, we will cover foot entrapment and hydraulic recovery. On the last day of the course students will take part in complex simulated rescue requiring all of their new-learned skills, teamwork and leadership.

The Ashuapmushuan (“place where one lays waiting for Moose” in Innu language) drains a vast area of boreal forest southeast into Lake St Jean and Saquenay fjord in Quebec. An ancient indigenous route to the gulf of St Lawrence, this beautiful river offers the rich opportunity to learn history of First Nations and French Voyagers in addition to some of the most interesting rapids ranging in difficulty between class II and IV. Over 200 kilometers of crystal-clear water, excellent fishing and unusually short portages make this a perfect paddling expedition. The Grand Chute on the river is of special mention complete with a natural jacuzzi, bottomless glacial potholes and secret passages leading to an ancient place of worship. Past the Chute the expedition will conclude with 45 kilometers of continuous class II rapids! Ashuapmushuan, while exciting for the most experienced of paddlers, is also appropriate as your first Canadian expedition. Note: Should Canada remain closed due to COVID-19 we will run this expedition on the equally beautiful West Branch of Penobscot River in Northern Maine.

Join us on this exciting expedition of white water paddling, rock climbing and exploring the rugged canyons of the Upper Deerfield River Valley. This introductory multi-element adventure will begin by rafting down class II and III rapids on the Deerfield River as we learn to paddle, read the river, and practice swimming in white water. The next day we will summit Negus Mountain. From here we will hike across the plateau before descending a steep ravine to a Tyrolean traverse across the river. Throughout, we will sing songs, roast bread-on-a-stick, and tell stories around the camp fire cultivating a strong community of explorers.

Students should be comfortable swimmers, and be physically fit to carry an overnight backpack up and back down the mountain with a smile!

(14 days)
Ages 11 - 13
For novice - intermediate buccaneers

Come one and all for a two-week treasure-hunting adventure! We will form our crew and head to the coast of Maine where we will take to the sea in voyageur canoes modeled after those that have been navigating northern waters for thousands of years. On the first day, we will travel a short distance across a sheltered bay to our first wilderness island home. We will sail from camp to camp, practice fire building, and create wilderness crafts. There will be islands to overtake and explore, coves to brave cold waters in, and tidal pools to investigate. We will forage for mussels, fish for mackerel, and harvest shells and special seaweed. Everyone will come away from this week having witnessed beautiful sunsets and made lasting new friendships. Sign up to uncover some of the mysteries of the sea!

Food, Farm, and Fire
Sun Aug 15 - Sat Aug 21, 2021
(7 days)
Ages 11 - 13

Engage your senses in this adventurous week of growing, foraging, and cooking delicious food. Become a master forager, a farm-to-table chef, and a connoisseur of wild tastes. We begin our journey on the Kroka farm, where we will cultivate vegetables and nurture animals that will provide us with the gift of food. Then, trading our pitchforks for knives, we will learn and master technical cooking skills from local celebrity chef and forager Theresa Darling. We will test our recipes in Kroka’s state-of-the-art sustainable kitchen – then take it up a notch by cooking over the open fire in the backcountry. With bags packed full of fresh ingredients, we will hike out to a wilderness campsite and build a stone hearth for cooking. Here we blend the culinary skills of the kitchen with the wild wisdom of the woods. As we prepare our recipes we will form a close-knit community of friends and share stories and songs. Our week will culminate with a student-prepared feast to share with the entire Kroka community!
